When you think of my homeland of Canada, you probably think of lots of ‘typically Canadian’ things. From poutine to ice hockey, maybe you believe that you have a pretty good idea of what Canada is all about, and what you can do here. Even if you’ve been to Canada before, have you really had a true Canadian experience? It’s a massive country, so getting a feel for it isn’t something that you can do in one short trip — in fact, I haven’t truly developed a sense of my own country until I began travelling from province to province in the past couple of years. There’s a lot to see and do, and you don’t want to miss out on some of the most essential Canadian experiences available.
Really Climb CN Tower
Let’s start in the city I was born and raised in. The CN Tower in Toronto is an iconic building, and one that many people aim to climb when they visit. But why simply go up the tower on the inside, when you could experience it from the outside? The tower has an EdgeWalk experience that gives you an opportunity to walk around the outside of the building’s restaurant level. You put on a red jumpsuit, strap yourself into a harness and walk around the roof. This one’s certainly not for anyone who’s afraid of heights, so if the thought of even being inside of the tower is enough to make you queasy, it might not be for you.
The laws for the use and possession of recreational drugs differ around the world. If there’s one that many countries are considering being more relaxed about, it’s marijuana. Canada became the second country in the world to legalize the stuff this past autumn, so anyone who wants to can now walk into a store and get some. In fact, you can even shop weed online and have it delivered straight your door. As Canada is one of the first countries to take such a liberal view of cannabis use, joining in with the locals has to be a truly Canadian experience. Just remember that you cannot take it out of the country. You might find though that weed is legal where you live. If it is, then you can easily order something like this pink death. Just double-check that weed is legal where you live first though.
Go on a Ski Adventure Like No Other
There are countless opportunities for skiing within Canada, and plenty of great resorts to choose from. If you want a ski trip that you’ll never forget, don’t bother with simply getting a ski lift up to your slope of choice. Have a helicopter drop you off for an exciting experience that will allow you to reach some incredible off-trail locations! Heli-skiing makes your ski adventure that much more exciting. If you want to avoid skiing but still fancy a helicopter ride, check out whistler blackcomb helicopter tours instead!
Take an Epic Rail Trip
Canada is a vast country, with sweeping landscapes that you don’t want to miss. If you don’t want to get up in a helicopter, you might prefer a more sedate way of travelling. From a steam train trip between prairie towns to a length cross-country trip, this is the perfect way to take in some of Canada’s incredible scenery. You could opt to only travel for a few hours, but if you really want to commit, why not try for a few days? On the cross-country trip from VIA Rail, you can enjoy four nights from Toronto to Vancouver and see everything through a glass roof.
